JOHNNY BRISTOL - NOT A FACSIMILE

JOHNNY BRISTOL enjoyed a creative and successful period as a SONGWRITER / PRODUCER working for  TAMLA MOTOWN from the late 60's onward. He co-produced '' AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH '' for MARVIN GAYE and TAMMI TERREL and also co-wrote and produced '' MY WHOLE WORLD ENDED { THE MOMENT YOU LEFT ME } for DAVID RUFFIN, '' TWENTY FIVE MILES '' for EDWIN STARR,  SOMEDAY WE'LL BE TOGETHER '' for THE SUPREMES and '' WHAT DOES IT TAKE { TO WIN YOUR LOVE } for JNR WALKER. He left MOTOWN in '73 and continued to produce records for CBS. When the company were unwilling to back him as a solo artist, he struck a deal with MGM and they released his Debut LP '' HANG ON IN THERE BABY '' the following year. The title track reached the US top ten when it was released on 45 and was hugely successful on the dancefloor. Today it's seen as one of the key records of the EARLY DISCO ERA

The LP included a number of great DISCO / FUNK and DEEP SOUL BALLADS, but BRISTOL choose the COUNTRY / SOUL number '' MEMORIES DONT LEAVE LIKE PEOPLE DO '' as the follow up. He clearly had great enthusiasm for the song as he had already produced a version for JERRY BUTLER and later did the same for JOHNNY MATHIS and TOM JONES .Unfortunately his his own version failed to register in the same way that '' HANG ON IN THERE '' had . The LP contained another COUNTRY / SOUL number that had an unusual BAROQUE feel: '' LOVE ME FOR A REASON ''. The track was placed at the end of the LP and it fades into a reprise of the opening cut '' WOMAN, WOMAN ''. That could have been the end of the story, but the song was given to another MGM act: THE OSMONDS. Producer MIKE CURB went for a more straightforward sound for their recording and dropped the harpsichord / flute feature which was reminiscent of '' I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM '' from the musical '' JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR ''. Two hit versions of that song had been recorded { one by cast member YVONNE ELLIMAN and another by HELEN REDDY } and to cloud things further: the melody was presumed to have been lifted from a violin concerto by ' Bach fanboy ' FELIX MENDELSSOHN

The OSMONDS were at the height of their success and the gifted song eased into the US top 10. In the UK it did even better, reaching the number 1 spot where it joined '' HANG ON IN THERE '' in the TOP 5. Ironically it's possibly still the only hit pop song to contain the word FACSIMILE!

PARIS - LIAR

'' LIAR '' was the B-Sibe of '' CIRLES '', The sole release by PARIS on the independant THUNDERBIRD label in '76. Both sides of the disc were co-produced by guitarist MICK GREEN whose band SHANGHAI put out an LP and a couple of singles on the label the same year { see the previous post on DENIM DISCO for more info on them }. The A side is a pleasant mid tempo MOR number that apparently went nowhere and it's interesting to speculate on the outcome had the disc been flipped as '' LIAR '' is a graceful and impressive YACHT SOUL number redolent of '' HOW LONG '' by ACE

KNUCKLE GIRLS VOLUMES 1 & 2

KNUCKLE GIRLS VOLUMES 1 & 2 are the most recent JUNKSHOP GLAM compilation LP's to hit the streets and despite the replication of 4 tracks from the GLAMSTAINS 3 { CHERRY BOMBS } comp, they do a great job of highlighting some of the unjustly overlooked female performers of the era . The sound quality is decent, they're pressed on nice chunky vinyl and come in magnificent colour sleeves with sleevenotes that cleverly mimic the RICHARD ALLEN pulp novels

VOLUME 1 { 14 BOVVER BIRD BLITZERS } kicks off strongly with '' I CAN SEE THE CHANGES '' by KUNY, a DUTCH release from 1973 seemingly inspired by SLADE and ALICE COOPER'S more melodic mid paced tunes. Sadly it appears to be her only release. Following on swiftly in the SUZI QUATRO mold we have '' SUZUKI 75 '' by CAROL AND THE BOSTON GARDEN, a dynamic stomper full of revving engine noises on the appropriately named VOOM VOOM label out of ITALY. We move aross the atlantic for '' GORILLA '' by DESIRA an L.A. NEW WAVE / HARD ROCK obscurity from '76, then back to the UK for '' OK '' from the ROCK FOLLIES OF 77 Soundtrack and '' CAROLINE '' a rare 70's ROCKIN' B-SIDE from TWINKLE { RIPLEY }. '' RESSURECTION SHUFFLE '' by MISTY is a US BUBBLEGUM reworking of the ASHTON GARDNER & DYKE hit and side one ends with a wonderful GLITTER POP reworking of '' EIGHT DAYS A WEEK '' by KRISTINE { Devil Woman } SPARKLE

SIDE TWO opens in explosive fashion with '' LOOKING FOR LOVE '' by GLO MACARI. Try and imagine LULU going full pelt while THE KINKS pound out a HARD ROCK take on '' JOY TO THE WORLD '' and you're almost there. More GLAM from LELLY BOONE with an excellent cover of THE EVERLY BROTHERS '' WHEN WILL I BE LOVED '' and some COUNTRY tinged GLAM in the form of '' BAD BOY '' by C.STAR. '' FLIPPER STORY '' by VICKY FURY is a real belter and pretty much the hight water mark of FRENCH GLAM, then back to the UK for LIFT OFF presenter AYSHEA with the ROY WOOD penned and produced '' FAREWELL '' . Side two ain't done yet though and closes in great style with some classic DUTCH GLAM in the shape of '' LOVEMAKER '' by HEART and the UK super obscurity '' BLITZ AT THE RITZ '' by VIC LEZAL's PROFESSIONALS, a 1974 release which predates series one of THE ROCK FOLLIES, but sounds like it could have been lifted from the show

VOLUME 2 { 14 PUGILISTIC PLATTERS } begins with '' I'm Aggressive '' by NINA MARTIN. A POST GLITTER bundle of energy with boisterous ABBA-ESQUE backing vox. A GERMAN RELEASE from '76 that also sneaked out in the UK the following year. '' BATTLE FOR MY LOVE '' by NORA follows hot on it's heels. A breathtaking high energy SPANISH STOMPER that builds and builds { Check out the amazing clip of her performaing the song on YOUTUBE! }. Back across the atlantic for '' SCHOOL'S BACK '' by PHILADELPHIA, a HARD GLAM number from '77 in the RUNAWAYS mold. '' IT'S THE MONSTER AGAIN '' by PAULA LINCOLN, is a DUTCH LP track from '75 that's heavily influenced by '' DEVIL GATE DRIVE '' and that has to be a good thing! Back to the UK for some POST PUNK HARD ROCK by biker chic VERMILION with '' I LIKE MOTORCYCLES '' and '' UPSIDE DOWN '' from GLITTER girl BOBBIE MCGEE. Side one ends on a high note with the GLAM CLASSIC '' LONG LONG WEEKEND '' by NQB, an ALL FEMALE SWEDISH GROUP

SIDE TWO opens with '' MIDNIGHT RIDER '' by THE ALISON MARKLEW BAND. No relation to the ALLMAN BROTHERS / PAUL DAVIDSON tune, this is a blusterous GLAM BOOGIE number that dropped on the pioneering UK indie PINNACLE in 1975. '' MR TEASER '' by LORENZA JOHNSON turns the boogie knob up to 11. A ROCKIN' PARTY RECORD that would stand up if you threw it on after '' TIGER FEET '' { now there's a compliment and a half! }. Back to Holland for the DEEP PURPLE meets ABBA monster ''NOBODY KNOWS '' by RADAR { a B-SIDE from '77 }, followed by something more familiar to most '' GOOD BEHAVIOR '' by ROCK FOLLIES, a PRE_PUNK feminist anthem from '76. THE NEW SETTLERS provide '' LIFELIGHT '' , A GLAM INFUSED HARMONY ROCKER , then it's back to the BOOGIE ROCK with '' SETTLE DOWN '' by PUNCHIN' JUDY { shades of ELKIE BROOKS in her VINEGAR JOE days }, before we reach closing time around the old joanna with '' STEAM HAMMER '' by JUDITH CROWNE, a UK obscurity on the DART label that's redolent of '' MY FRIEND STAN '' by those stalwarts of The Bilston Trumpet: SLADE

LOCO GLAM FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

Leicester band LOCO released an excellent 45 on the BUK label in 1975 after they appeared on the NEW FACES TV TALENT SHOW. Both sides of the record were composed and produced by STEVE FERN who had previously led the 60's soul group FERNS BRASS FOUNDRY and worked with the former SPENCER DAVIS GROUP drummer PETER YORK. Side A ''AT THE LOCAL DANCE'' is a late period GLAM POP number that sounds reminiscent of MUD and early SHOWADDYWADDY, while the B Side ''THE MAN'' is a DISCOTHEQUE ROCK number that owes more than a little to the aforementioned SPENCER DAVIS GROUP

WALLY TAX - THIS GIRL IS MINE

Dutch singer/songwriter WALLY TAX was born in Amsterdam in 1948 and found fame as the vocalist in the 60's NEDERBEAT group THE OUTSIDERS. The band were highly regarded in Holland and were considered by many to be the Dutch ROLLING STONES. The live side of their DEBUT LP from 1967 captures the wildness of their act and the hysteria they generated in their audience

The group recorded a string of amazing songs as good as any in the era, but made little impact in the rest of the world. They split at the end of the decade and Tax put together another band TAX FREE, briefly moving to the US where an LP was recorded and released

Unfortunately the anticipated US breakthrough failed to materialize and Tax returned to Holland to embark on a solo career and write songs for others. His 70's material moved closer to the MOR field, string dominated and often reminiscent of BUDDY HOLLY'S later pop discs { ''MISS WONDERFUL'' from 1973 is a good example of this }

His biggest hit would come in 1977 with ''LET'S DANCE'' and the songs he wrote for CHAMPAGNE { one of which: ''ROCK n' ROLL STAR'' charted in the US }. ''THIS GIRL IS MINE'' from 1975 didn't fare as well but was an artistic high, driven by a DISCO HI HAT, SWEEPING STRINGS and WAH WAH GUITAR it stands as a perfect example of MID SEVENTIES PHILLY INSPIRED DANCE POP

FLYOVER - THE HAMMERSMITH HUSTLE

''Keep Movin', Keep Movin', Keep Movin', Keep Movin'
Keep Movin', Keep Movin', Keep Movin', Keep Movin'!''

''Down London town with the noise 'n' bustle,
We've got a dance, it's the Hammersmith Hustle!''

THE HAMMERSMITH PALAIS was a large DANCE HALL situated in a working class neighbourhood in WEST LONDON. Built in 1910 as Roller Skating Rink and converted to host ballroom dancing in the '20's, the venue weathered countless musical trends and was drawing crowds in excess of 2,000 for it's SATURDAY NIGHT DISCO during the mid seventies when songwriter/producer MIKE FINESILVER hit upon idea of a dance number with a distinctive LONDON flavour

Queuing to get into the Palais on a saturday night in '73

Finesilver had co-written the hit ''FIRE'' for THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN in the late 60's and went on to found PATHWAY STUDIOS with partner PETER KER. In early '76 he set about recording this cheeky tribute to ''THE HUSTLE'' by VAN McCOY In the tiny 8-TRACK STUDIO. He choose the name FLYOVER for the studio band {on account of a flyover running close to the venue} and ROCKET RECORDS pressed it on '45. It failed to set the world alight, but was presumably spun at the venue itself. Does anyone remember hearing it?

Dancing around the handbag on a Saturday night

During the next couple of years the studio became synonymous with the early PUNK/NEW WAVE movement and the likes of THE DAMNNED, SHAM 69, SQUEEZE and MADNESS recorded there. One band that didn't were THE CLASH, but they recorded their own tribute to the venue ''WHITE MAN AT THE HAMMERSMITH PALAIS'' at BASING STREET STUDIOS up the road in Notting Hill around mid '78. Pathway continued to operate untill the mid 90's and The Palais finally shut it's doors in 2007 and was demolished in 2012

                                                                    ''Alright my son?

                                                                    Yeah! Lovely init'?

                                                                    Just keep on dancing''

BOB ROWE'S MUSIC BOX - BLOCKBUSTER

BOB ROWE'S MUSIC BOX was one of many INSTRUMENTAL SYNTH-POP COVER LP's that were released in the wake of ''POPCORN'' by HOT BUTTER {a huge hit in 1972}. His 'CHICORY TIP meets SWEET' version of ''BLOCKBUSTER'' is a highlight from the 1973 release that also included a take on ''SON OF MY FATHER''

JIMMY PASHA AND THE HI-SHOTS - DANCE TO THE ROCK 'N' ROLL

A super obscure up-tempo GLAM infused POP-ROCK number with a catchy sing along chorus and  phased drum break. A UK release from '74 on the SKY Label. It appears to be the only record issued on SKY, so it's possibly a self released independent. The B-Side ''I'll Be There'' is a quirky COD REGGAE styled number. Additional information would be gratefully received. Are you out there Mr Pasha?

NOOSHA FOX - THE HEAT IS ON

''THE HEAT IS ON'' was the second solo release from the former FOX vocalist after she left the band in 1977.Her first solo effort ''GEORGINA BAILEY'' was a minor hit that year, but a follow up didn't materialize until 1979.The song's dreamy half time LATIN/REGGAE feel, pepped up by a FUNKY CLAVINET and TIMBALE DRUM FILLS had all the makings of a SUMMER HIT,but sadly that was not to be.Ironically the song was re-recorded by the former ABBA vocalist AGNETHA FALTSKOG a few years later. It used a very similar arrangement and would go on to be the singers biggest international solo release

GINO VANNELLI'S SOUL TRAIN DEBUT

GINO VANNELI was a Canadian singer who combined JAZZ,POP,ROCK and SOUL influences in a captivating and unique fashion.''PEOPLE GOTTA MOVE'' {a SOULFUL LATIN DANCE tune from his 1974 LP ''POWERFUL PEOPLE''} began to pick up plays on BLACK RADIO in the U.S.A and a chance meeting with STEVIE WONDER led to him being offered a support slot on a short tour {replacing an unavailable CHAKA KHAN}.The tune was released on 7'' and shortly after DON CORNELIOUS got in touch and offered a spot on his SOUL TRAIN TV Show.Gino was only the second non black artist to appear on the show {the first being the veteran MOTOWN session guitarist DENNIS COFFEY}.He put in a stellar performance and received an enthusiastic response from THE SOUL TRAIN GANG.The song went onto reach Number 22 in THE BILLBOARD HOT 100

UNION EXPRESS - ALLIGATOR FIX

Union Express were a VOCAL HARMONY GROUP in the style of THE NEW SEEKERS.The band formed by songwriter/producer PAUL CURTIS enjoyed success across Europe with the song ''RING A RING A ROSES" in 1972.The record reached the number one spot in many counties, but follow up 45's {and an LP} failed to capitalize on it's success.Their final 45 was something else altogether ''ALLIGATOR FIX'' is a curio that sounds like an odd pairing of ABBA with SUZI QUATRO and stands as an off the wall example of 70's JUNKSHOP GLAM

FOX - MY OLD MAN'S AWAY

''YOU HAD TO SEE A CLIENT OUTSIDE OF TOWN
ABOUT TO CLINCH A DEAL OR THAT'S WHAT YOU SAID
THE LINES YOU WOVE I NEVER NEEDED A DOUBT
BUT WORD GOT BACK ABOUT THAT LITTLE REDHEAD

MY OLD MAN'S AWAY
NOW'S OUR CHANCE TO PLAY
IT'S LOVELY WEATHER
LET'S GET TOGETHER''

FOX were a UK based group put together by the American Songwriter/producer KENNY YOUNG.Young had been active in the music industry for a number of years and his most notable achievement had been co-writing ''UNDER THE BOARDWALK'' for the DRIFTERS {Future Garry Glitter collaborator Mike Leander was responsible for the arrangement}.The band had a number of hits in the UK and were fronted by the charismatic vocalist NOOSHA FOX who possessed a distinctive and alluring voice and an elegant retro dress sense inspired by Marlene Dietrich

Their time in the limelight was brief and the bands last notable hit was ''S-S-S-SINGLE BED'' which was a top 5 hit in mid 1976.In the following year they released their third {and final} LP BLUE HOTEL

On their previous LP {TAILS OF ILLUSION} they made the mistake of relegating Noosha to a minor role and she had only provided lead vocals on some of the tracks.BLUE HOTEL {which included the previous hit ''S-S-S-SINGLE BED''} should have given them fresh impetus as it contained some great songs and marked a genuine return to form.Despite the quality of the record,it failed to produce any additional hits as the next single pulled from it ''MY OLD MAN'S AWAY'' failed to sell in substantial quantities. The songs lack of success is surprising as it was one of their best, containing a catchy guitar riff, strong melody,a contemporary sounding disco tinged rhythm and great lyrics {in the mold of ''ME AND MRS JONES'' by BILLY PAUL} which are perfectly complimented by Noosha's sultry trademark tone

MEAN MACHINE - RUNNING WITH THE RAT PACK

MEAN MACHINE appear to have been a studio project that included songwriter/vocalist ROGER COOK,bassist HERBIE FLOWERS and drummer BRIAN BENNETT.All three were well established in their respective fields when the 45 was released in early 1976.COOK had written a number of hits and was a member of BLUE MINK along with FLOWERS.BRIAN BENNETT {like FLOWERS} was in demand on both POP and 'LIBRARY' sessions and had also released a number of solo LP's.The TOP SIDE: ''RUNNING WITH THE RAT PACK'' is a medium tempo HARMONICA driven COUNTRY FUNK number that brings to mind AREA CODE 615 and TONY JOE WHITE

The tempo is turned up on the B-SIDE: ''BOOGIE TO THE DRUMMER'',a fantastic dance number that owes a little to ''THE RESURRECTION SHUFFLE'' by ASHTON GARDENER & DYKE,BENNETT leads the charge on this one, syncopated SNARE ROLLS,COWBELL and WHISTLES lay the base for a VOCAL CHANT and some propulsive BOOGIE PIANO

DAVID SCOTT - THE GETAWAY

''THE GETAWAY'' by DAVID SCOTT is a remarkable ROCK/SOUL number with a dynamic sound production. It was recorded at THE MORGAN SOUND STUDIO in Brussels,Belgium during 1975.The studio was set up as an expansion of the London Morgan Studios where a number of top selling records by the likes of:PINK FLOYD,LED ZEPPELIN,ROD STEWART and FREE were recorded

Engineer MIKE BUTCHER handled the bulk of the work at the Brussels wing and he certainly did a great job on ''THE GETAWAY''.The song leaps out of the speakers with a HARD GUITAR RIFF/SIREN SOUND/STRINGS intro and moves into a dynamic number that seemingly melds THE BEATLES ''GET BACK'' with ''CALL THE POLICE'' by HOT CHOCOLATE

The 45 was released on the Belgium independent DECIBEL RECORDS.A further DAVID SCOTT 45 ''DANCE DANCE MAMMA'' was released by the CNR label in the same year

HELLO - NEW YORK GROOVE

In contrast to the superstars of the UK GLAM-ROCK scene,HELLO were not seasoned performers, but a group of genuine teenagers. The band were signed to BELL RECORDS in 1972 and kicked things off with a couple of strong rocking 45's penned by songwriter RUSS BALLARD

Their first hit was the GLITTER BAND styled reading of the R'n'B classic ''TELL HIM''.The record reached number 6 in the UK charts at the end of'74.Subsequent releases fared less well and the best part of a year passed before another RUSS BALLARD song ''NEW YORK GROOVE'' returned them to the TOP TEN.Producer MIKE LEANDER mixed the beat loudly {as he did with his GARY GLITTER/THE GLITTER BAND productions} and captured a great performance from the band. The feel was somewhere between BO DIDDLEY and HAMILTON BOHANNON.A GLAM/DISCO fusion that was perfect for the time and perfect for the dance floor. The record spent nine weeks in the charts and peaked at number 9

In 1978 ACE FREHLEY the lead guitarist of KISS recorded a version of the song and scored a TOP 20 HIT in THE BILLBOARD HOT 100
