MEAN MACHINE - RUNNING WITH THE RAT PACK
MEAN MACHINE appear to have been a studio project that included songwriter/vocalist ROGER COOK,bassist HERBIE FLOWERS and drummer BRIAN BENNETT.All three were well established in their respective fields when the 45 was released in early 1976.COOK had written a number of hits and was a member of BLUE MINK along with FLOWERS.BRIAN BENNETT {like FLOWERS} was in demand on both POP and 'LIBRARY' sessions and had also released a number of solo LP's.The TOP SIDE: ''RUNNING WITH THE RAT PACK'' is a medium tempo HARMONICA driven COUNTRY FUNK number that brings to mind AREA CODE 615 and TONY JOE WHITE
The tempo is turned up on the B-SIDE: ''BOOGIE TO THE DRUMMER'',a fantastic dance number that owes a little to ''THE RESURRECTION SHUFFLE'' by ASHTON GARDENER & DYKE,BENNETT leads the charge on this one, syncopated SNARE ROLLS,COWBELL and WHISTLES lay the base for a VOCAL CHANT and some propulsive BOOGIE PIANO

DAVID SCOTT - THE GETAWAY
''THE GETAWAY'' by DAVID SCOTT is a remarkable ROCK/SOUL number with a dynamic sound production. It was recorded at THE MORGAN SOUND STUDIO in Brussels,Belgium during 1975.The studio was set up as an expansion of the London Morgan Studios where a number of top selling records by the likes of:PINK FLOYD,LED ZEPPELIN,ROD STEWART and FREE were recorded
Engineer MIKE BUTCHER handled the bulk of the work at the Brussels wing and he certainly did a great job on ''THE GETAWAY''.The song leaps out of the speakers with a HARD GUITAR RIFF/SIREN SOUND/STRINGS intro and moves into a dynamic number that seemingly melds THE BEATLES ''GET BACK'' with ''CALL THE POLICE'' by HOT CHOCOLATE
The 45 was released on the Belgium independent DECIBEL RECORDS.A further DAVID SCOTT 45 ''DANCE DANCE MAMMA'' was released by the CNR label in the same year

HELLO - NEW YORK GROOVE
In contrast to the superstars of the UK GLAM-ROCK scene,HELLO were not seasoned performers, but a group of genuine teenagers. The band were signed to BELL RECORDS in 1972 and kicked things off with a couple of strong rocking 45's penned by songwriter RUSS BALLARD
Their first hit was the GLITTER BAND styled reading of the R'n'B classic ''TELL HIM''.The record reached number 6 in the UK charts at the end of'74.Subsequent releases fared less well and the best part of a year passed before another RUSS BALLARD song ''NEW YORK GROOVE'' returned them to the TOP TEN.Producer MIKE LEANDER mixed the beat loudly {as he did with his GARY GLITTER/THE GLITTER BAND productions} and captured a great performance from the band. The feel was somewhere between BO DIDDLEY and HAMILTON BOHANNON.A GLAM/DISCO fusion that was perfect for the time and perfect for the dance floor. The record spent nine weeks in the charts and peaked at number 9
In 1978 ACE FREHLEY the lead guitarist of KISS recorded a version of the song and scored a TOP 20 HIT in THE BILLBOARD HOT 100

RAY BURDIS AND FLINTLOCK - I HATE ROSLA
''I Hate ROSLA, I Hate ROSLA
The Raising Of The School Leaving Age''
''From When I was 14,I used To Sit And Dream
Another Year To Go And I'll Be Working
They Gone And Raised The Age,Another Year To Go
A Year In This Prison Camp,Oh No!''
RAY BURDIS was a familiar face on UK TV during the mid to late 70's,often playing characters that were 'A Little Bit Lively'.The working class Londoner was one of the first pupils to attend THE ANNA SHEER DRAMA SCHOOL in ISLINGTON when it was founded in 1968.The school was set up to enable disadvantaged children to find a way into acting. It's reputation grew rapidly and it was soon supplying actors for the stage and screen.
In 1975 actors from the school were enlisted to write and perform in the TV show YOU MUST BE JOKING.the program featured topical and satirical sketches, news items and live music from a semi professional pop group FLINTLOCK.All the performers {apart from one presenter,JIM BOWEN} were teenagers and the brash and informal style of the show was cutting edge for it's time
FLINTLOCK performed as a self contained unit and as a backing band when the presenters sang satirical songs. One of the most memorable of these was ''ROSLA'',a song about the recent rise in the age that teenagers could legally leave school. The number with it's 'shouty' vocals and 'unmannered' playing prefigures the DIY PUNK sound of THE DESPERATE BICYCLES by a couple of years
Burdis continued to dabble in music and formed the PUNK/METAL band GREAT BRITISH HEROES the following year. The band were part the LONDON 'NEW WAVE' scene and played at venues like THE ROXY,THE NASHVILLE and THE ROCKGARDEN.A 7'' single was recorded for LIGHTNING RECORDS in 1978,but was withdrawn before release
Ray quit the band shortly after to concentrate on acting. He continued to act in Film and TV and went onto produce and direct

SCORCHED EARTH - ON THE RUN
''The Freedom Path Is Never Straight
It's Crooked And It's Full Of Hate
But Brother Hold On,You Gotta Hold On
Crosses Burning Up The Night
A Hooded Face Against The Light
But Brother Hold On,You Gotta Hold On''
SCORCHED EARTH were a band put together by songwriter/producer BEN FINDON as a vehicle for the Trinidadian born singer BILLY OCEAN.Their sole release was a 45 for the YOUNG BLOOD label in 1974.The record reveals the band as a first rate FUNK-ROCK outfit with POP sensibilities. The top side ''ON THE RUN'' is based around a medium paced drum and bass dance groove that builds with a melodic string arrangement and vocal hook. The songs lyrics refer to civil rights/race issues in a similar way to those of ''BROTHER LOUIE'' by HOT CHOCOLATE {another band that fused ROCK and SOUL influences}.The B-Side ''CAN YOU FEEL IT'' is a harder edged FUNK number that brings to mind SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE.
The following year Ben took Billy to the GTO record label where he achieved solo success with ''LOVE REALLY HURTS WITHOUT YOU'' and ''RED LIGHT SPELLS DANGER'' in in 1976 and 1977 respectively

BOB WELCH - FRENCH KISS
Bob Welch was the son of a movie producer, born in Los Angeles in 1945 and raised in Beverly Hills. In the early 60's he studied in Paris and hung out with local musicians before returning to California in the middle of the decade to join multiracial group THE SEVEN SOULS. After the group folded he returned to Paris and formed another group HEAD WEST, before joining FLEETWOOD MAC in 1971.He recorded 5 LP's with the band, but left before the recording of their breakthrough self titled LP in 1975
Welch had contributed a lot to FLEETWOOD MAC in terms of performance and songwriting, so it wasn't difficult to land a record deal for his next project PARIS ,a hard rock power trio in which he was joined by ex-Jethro Tull bassist Glenn Cornick and former Nazz drummer Thom Mooney. The band released two moderately selling LP's in 75' and 76,but split soon after. Songs from an aborted 3rd LP would appear on the 1st Bob Welch solo release, the sublime rock/disco fusion FRENCH KISS in September 77'.The first 45 that was pulled from it ''EBONY EYES'' took off and the LP reached #12 on the Billboard album chart at the start of the following year
The LP is literally crammed with gems and stands as one of the greats of the the late 70's.It's follow up THREE HEARTS in 79' replicated the format, but was less successful artistically and in terms of sales. Bob continued to record, but nothing reached the peak of FRENCH KISS. Tragically he took his own life in 2012 while suffering from serious pain following spinal surgery
FRENCH KISS - SIDE ONE,TRACK 3 - HOT LOVE IN A COLD WORLD
FRENCH KISS - SIDE ONE,TRACK 6 - OUTSKIRTS
FRENCH KISS - SIDE TWO,TRACK 3 - CAROLENE
FRENCH KISS - SIDE TWO,TRACK 4 - DANCIN' IN OUR EYES
